Prof. Darwin G. Caldwell, with a B.Sc. in Robotics and a Ph.D. in Robotics from the University of Hull, is a renowned figure in the field. As the Founding Director of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genova and the Director of the Department of Advanced Robotics (ADVR) at IIT, he has made pioneering contributions to compliant and variable impedance actuation, soft and human-friendly robotics, and medical robotics. Prof. Caldwell's work extends to wearable and haptic systems, including XoSoft, XoTrunk, XoShoulder, and XoElbow. He has authored over 700 papers, holds 25 patents, and received numerous international awards and nominations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and the IEEE (FIEEE), and his expertise spans robotics, exoskeletons, and humanoid and quadruped robots.
